Alveolar foam

Alveolar foams, also known as "egg-crate foams", are a benchmark solution for acoustic insulation thanks to their increased sound absorption surface, which is approximately 30 to 40% greater. Solutions Elastomères offers polyurethane and Basotect melamine foams, available in several thicknesses and configurations, including moisture protection and an integrated heavy mass to help reduce low-frequency noise.

Alveolar foams, also known as convoluted foams or "egg-crate foams", are among the most widely used acoustic foam solutions. They have been a benchmark for many years because their specific profile increases the sound absorption surface by approximately 30 to 40% compared with flat foams. Solutions Elastomères offers a wide range of alveolar foams in different thicknesses (30 and 50 mm), different materials (polyurethane foam and Basotect melamine foam), as well as options such as a 100% waterproof moisture-protection film or a 5 kg/m² heavy mass to help attenuate low-frequency noise.

What is alveolar acoustic foam or convoluted acoustic foam?

Alveolar acoustic foams, also known as convoluted acoustic foams, are manufactured using a specific process that creates a surface made up of peaks and recesses. From an acoustic point of view, this provides a major advantage by increasing the sound-wave absorption surface by approximately 40% compared with a flat surface. Alveolar foams, commonly referred to as "egg-crate foams", have been manufactured for many years and remain a standard solution for anyone looking to efficiently soundproof machinery, studios, compressors and many other types of equipment.

Solutions Elastomères offers a wide range of alveolar acoustic foams for various applications: sound insulation for music rooms, acoustic treatment for recording studios, soundproofing for machines (pumps, engines, generator sets, air-conditioning systems, heating systems, ventilation systems, compressors, etc.).

Alveolar foams can be manufactured from polyurethane foam as standard or from melamine foam for applications requiring a fire-rated material. Some versions can also be protected on one side by a film that is 100% resistant to moisture and dust (SE50AL-SM Alveolar Foam). Most of these acoustic foams feature a self-adhesive backing for simple, efficient and cost-effective installation.

Packaging and formats of alveolar acoustic foams

Alveolar acoustic foams are available as panels in several formats:

- SE30AL Alveolar Foam: 2000 x 1400 mm panel, 30 mm thick, with adhesive backing. Colour: Black / Glossy Grey

- SE50AL Alveolar Foam: 2000 x 1400 mm panel, 50 mm thick, with adhesive backing. Colour: Black / Glossy Grey

- SE50AL-ML Alveolar Foam: 2000 x 1400 mm panel, 50 mm thick, incorporating a 5 kg/m² PVC heavy mass and adhesive backing. Colour: Black / Glossy Grey

- SE50AL-SM Alveolar Foam: 2000 x 1000 mm panel, 50 mm thick, with a black polyurethane protective film that is 100% waterproof on one side, plus adhesive backing.

Alveolar acoustic foams are also available in cartons:

- Grey Alveolar Melamine Foam (fire-rated): 1 carton = 16 panels measuring 600 x 600 x 50 mm, providing a total surface area of 5.76 m². Colour: White / Grey

- Melamine Pyramid Foam (fire-rated): 1 carton = 12 panels measuring 600 x 600 x 50 mm, providing a total surface area of 4.32 m². Colour: White / Grey

Alveolar acoustic foams offer excellent value for money. Large stock available. Small quantities can also be supplied by roll depending on the reference.

Technical data sheets, acoustic test reports and thermal test reports are available for each foam and can be downloaded in PDF format directly from the relevant product page.

Example of an acoustic treatment application:

Acoustic foam for shooting ranges

50 mm alveolar foams are a widely used solution in shooting ranges throughout France and Europe. Their factory-formed alveolar profile significantly increases the acoustic absorption surface, by approximately 40% compared with a flat foam surface. This type of foam is commonly used in shooting ranges because it offers excellent value for money. Part of the acoustic energy generated by gunshots is absorbed through the thickness of the foam, helping to reduce sound reflections and noise levels for both neighbouring areas and users of the facility.

In recent years, Solutions Elastomères has developed a version of this alveolar foam featuring a surface film that is 100% waterproof: SE50AL-SM. This protective film helps improve the foam's durability, as prolonged exposure to moisture can adversely affect plastic materials and acoustic foams.
